‪This article evaluates the contributions of Etienne Vacherot and Augustin Cournot to Léon Walras’s philosophy. It shows that Walras did not fully appreciate what he owed to Cournot’s philosophy, to which he was also indebted through Vacherot’s philosophy, which borrowed heavily from the author of the ‪‪Recherches‪‪. This article assesses how Walras goes beyond Vacherot’s philosophy, while at the same time following in his footsteps, in terms of the status that can be accorded to his ideal types and mathematical objects. Finally, it shows how Walras’s model is thus based on Platonic realism, and is more normative than positive.‪
