Islam and the question of honour: the Quranic viewpoint and the reflection of Ghazali

Honour is a subject of reflection in Islam, both in its sources and in its “legal”, moral and spiritual thinking. The Quran introduces a moral and religious revolution by making man’s position before the one God the sole criterion for a truly successful human life, rejecting as futile all that had previously ensured him glory, honour, and recognition from his contemporaries. The Prophet, “the creature who occupies the highest rank in God’s sight”, is presented by traditionalists as a humble servant rather than a king defending his honour. The jurist and theologian Ghazali finely analyses man’s appetite for honour, describing its causes and offering ways of overcoming it, seeing that it is one of the paths leading to perdition, even though the author also recognises that honour has its rightful place in human life.
