— The diversity of motivations for public sector employees. Exploratory research in a post-bureaucratic context in Switzerland — In recent decades, research on civil servants’ motivation has been dominated by two theoretical approaches: the so-called rational choices approach, and that of motivation for public service. In the current post-bureaucratic environment, this simplified view which, to some extent, also reflects the “public-private” dichotomy, does not adequately reflect the complexity and heterogeneity of public officials’ motivations. Based on empirical data which is both qualitative (73 interviews) and quantitative (sample of 757 respondents), an original typology of motivations in the post-bureaucratic world is developed and tested in several Swiss public sector organisations. This reveals motivating factors which, in an original manner, combine the traditional elements of bureaucracy with other sources of motivation characteristic of modern forms of public administration.
