The author considers the question of psychic pain and its destinies. During some contradictory exchanges with the author at the congress, Seulin strongly rejected the question of masochism in terms of psychopathology. It is nevertheless life masochism that allows the depressive position to be attained, reducing splittings for the patient’s greatest benefit. The concept of masochism allows pain to be thought about as a provisional ally in the course of its removal; it should therefore not be lost either from theory or in clinical practice.
