The advocates of the id. An analyst’s diary and his metapsychological asset

In 1923, Freud was faced with the alternative of making the superego, derived from the id, the judge of the id or its advocate. It was the judge who prevailed in his texts and those of his successors. In this article I venture to develop the intuition that the superego is also the advocate of the id. I look for it in the analyst who is simultaneously in dialogue with his id and with his patient, relying on his openness to his own dreams in the session. The practice of psychodrama introduces the analyst to this approach to the id. At other times, the analyst becomes an advocate of the ego, with the aim of leading the patient towards what is latent or of welcoming the schizophrenic. My use of metapsychology is an asset after my days of analysis and continues my self-analysis.
