N2  - This work discusses the role played by Belgian jurists at the 1919 Versailles Peace Conference, which signaled the beginning of modern international law’s active phase. A small country that had repealed its neutrality and was recognized for its economic expansion, August 1914 “martyr” Belgium mobilized arguments on legal expertise in order to approach a large-scale international negotiation where, to its surprise, its claims would be little heard. This study aims to identify the relative weight of Belgian jurists in the decision-making process in Versailles but also what they express about a country that had lost influence and whose position in the world was at a turning point
