This article situates coaching practices in companies within social regulation processes that increasingly solicit the individual and his personality, instrumentalized in terms of competence. Based on a survey of CAC 40 companies as well as a case study taken from our own practice, we have put forward the aims of the recommended coaching, which are oriented toward both social control and mediation between the individual and the organization. In assuming these elements of reality, however, coaches cannot renounce the human—even humanist—objectives of their practices.
