The Provençal woman and her belt: Comparative study of sources for the fourteenth–sixteenth centuries
- 2024.
96
From the second half of the thirteenth century onward, archaeological findings of metal belt components and belt types reached a variety not seen since Merovingian times. Archaeology, archival and literary sources, and iconography bear witness to the fact that the belt is a functional accessory, a fashion accessory, and a signifying object. These sources can be used to characterize typically feminine belts. The article proposes a typology and an anthropology in the Provençal context, while remaining open to a more general context.
