N1 - 29 N2 - The illegibility of tales of memories of the events that shaped the first half of the twentieth century is becoming a topos in the genre of testimony, in the same way as the notion of the unspeakable. It is a limit set on the writings of true witnesses, a signal of the unshareability of an abnormal experience. Yet, illegibility is gradually moving beyond its sole position as a constitutive limit on stories and becoming the very subject of contemporary testimonies. Through this discourse on the limits imposed upon the genre of testimony, the new witnesses—those who write at a distance from the events, without having necessarily participated themselves in the events they are relating—question the legacy that we have been left with and, in particular, our ability to become inheritors of this part of history. Illegibility makes us confront our position as the witness to the witness UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-revue-de-litterature-comparee-2018-3-page-279?lang=en&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
