A new configuration in the Middle East: On the reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran

Saudi Arabia and Iran signing a reconciliation agreement in Beijing in March 2023 marks a major turning point in the relations between the two countries. This could induce a substantial disruption in the regional order and even lead to a new geopolitical configuration. However, questions about the agreement – that was signed under the aegis of China – persist, especially regarding its terms, its true motives, and its ability to bridge all divides between Riyad and Tehran. This article aims to analyse the geopolitical context and shines a light on the factors that have led to this reconciliation in order to examine the new regional configuration.
