The human imago Dei and the Artificial Intelligence imago hominis? - 2023.

In this article, we shall first present the main models of interpreting the imago Dei (ontological, functional, relational) utilised by Noreen Herzfeld in her book In Our Image: Artificial Intelligence and the Human Spirit (Fortress Press, 2002) to elaborate her thesis of artificial intelligence (AI) as imago hominis. In the light of Christ as imago Dei par excellence, we then propose revising the theology of the image by focusing on the human as incarnate, personal and filial image of God, that is, the dimensions that are not purely and simply transposable to AI. In spite of impressive potentialities, AI has more the appearance of being human than the image of the human in the strict sense.
