‘Rare are those who would believe it’: hierarchy and proximity of God according to Saint Bonaventure
- 2022.

How can Bonaventure argue without contradiction for the necessity of mediations (hierarchies, itinerary) between God and the human soul and the possibility of an immediate experience of God? Should we see in this a tension between the general ministry reputed to be authoritarian and the mystic anxious to taste the presence of God? Far from this caricature, examination of Bonaventure’s conception of Order and his doctrine of the spiritual senses inherent to mediations only have meaning if they bring humankind back towards the experience of the presence of God in their lives.
