Whereas in the 17th century, mysticism seems to occupy a central place in Christian spirituality, a deep distrust parallels this rise not only on the part of freethinkers but also from ‘enlightened’ theologians’: ecstasy is the target of their censures; ecstasy is achieved in writing rather than in sensorial phenomena.
