The theme of mourning plays an important role in Barthes’s reflections, particularly from A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments, which was written in 1977. In this essay, I study the major contexts of its appearance, focusing on the numerous references he made to Freud, Lacan, and Donald Winnicott.
