N2  - As this issue of Tribunes de la Santé goes to press, the COVID-19 pandemic is still terribly topical. When it comes to the third global pandemic, the data contained within Johns Hopkins University’s interactive map is incredibly striking: 160,513,476 cases and 3,333,690 deaths worldwide, with France in fourth place (107,280 deaths). With more than 1.3 billion vaccine doses administered, the “race against time”—in the words of the Conseil scientifique (Scientific Council)—is on between universal vaccination and the universalism of variants. Yet as the third wave in France is receding, the fight against COVID-19 has left the shores of science and public health to become a political issue. Because in this third wave it seems that some decision-makers and observers have forgotten what has happened since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan (China), this article focuses on the story of someone who actually worked on the ground during the crisis: the head of the infectious diseases department at Tenon Hospital in Paris. His logbook, kept from January 2020 to May 2021 and now included in a book, tells of a harrowing and terrifying struggle. Not only does it remind us what happened, but it also bears witness to how the caregivers and the entire hospital adapted and withstood the rising tide of COVID-19. As with AIDS, we must tell our stories and bear witness. We also need to return to look at the unpreparedness of the French and European health services in the face of such a pandemic
