The exploration of urban memory: Politic of memory and amnesia - 2019.

91

Through a social-territorial approach axed on the understanding of the link between memory and the city in historical and social terms, this article aims to bring a theoretical contribution analysing the relation between memory, the historical events and the mnemonic selection or suppression in three cities – Berlin, Rome and New York – which had to resist and react to the political and social traumas during different periods of their history. The palimpsest that emerges from this analysis, shows that the politics of memory, or its elimination, constitute a fundamental interpretative category for the understanding of the contemporary society, precisely because they succeeded to transform the spatial and temporal experience of the individuals in the urban space.
