TY - BOOK AU - Clair,Isabelle TI - Discovering Marital Boredom PY - 2011///. N1 - 64 N2 - Based on two field investigations carried out with boys and girls between 15 and 20 years of age–in suburban projects in Paris, and later in villages in Sarthe–this paper tries to prove the existence specifically of marital boredom, related to boredom broadly speaking, encouraged by youth and belonging to enclaved working classes. The roots of this boredom can be found in the contradictions specific to the two pillars of today’s marital life: on one hand the marital ideal which requires the greatest possible proximity between two persons while at the same time demanding difference between sexes; there is the egalitarian ethos, on the other hand, which vehiculates the principle of equality between sexes and their complementarity in the same vein, making the discovery of the heterosexual couple a renewed moment of the experience of male domination. The paper therefore describes the boredom experienced by these young people as the experience of a present devalued at three levels: with respect to their expectations from the relationship, with respect to their social milieu and generation and with respect to their necessarily more fulfilled adult future."
