Scientists, television, and ecology: Popularizers and whistleblowers - 2015.

13

This paper deals with the relationship between naturalists and the media, especially television. Even though scientists distrust the media, this must not mask their commitment at various levels, ranging from consultants to whistleblowers. Believing in the power of the media and television, they contribute to the creation of documentaries. This influence does not only relate to their engagement, but also to the transfer of a specific vocabulary into the public sphere, including the words “ecology” and “biodiversity,” often at the price of a change of the original definition. Since the 1950s, this presence of naturalists on TV has allowed people to tame wild nature.
