Cultural icon and figure of solidarity: Angela Davis’ media presence in West Germany in the early 1970s

This article examines how West German solidarity with Angela Davis figured in different media: the press, protest songs, and publications from the solidarity movement. It shows how Davis has been constructed as cultural icon and as figure of solidarity, how powerful she became as a symbol, and for which political agendas she was appropriated. The international media attention and the global solidarity movement have certainly influenced the outcome of her trial; at the same time, her case and Angela Davis as a public figure have been utilized by different actors for their own purposes.
