The metamorphosis of the national flag in India

<br/><br/> Sociocultural and anthropological approaches to politics have revived interest in national symbols. Through this lens, the Indian national flag can be seen as a crucial tool in the development of a democratic culture during the colonial period, which was shaped by grassroots struggles and the circulation of international models. The gradual establishment of public and private rituals associated with the flag created an emotional framework and established a national community of sentiment, which was foundational for consolidating democratic ideals after independence. The recent liberalizing of the flag’s uses has transformed it into common property, mobilized by the state and protest movements alike.  Les approches socio-culturelles et anthropologiques de la politique ont ravivé l’intérêt pour les symboles nationaux. À travers ce prisme, le drapeau national de l’Inde se révèle un outil clé dans l’élaboration d’une culture démocratique, à l’époque coloniale, nourrie des luttes sur le terrain et les circulations de modèles provenant d’un paysage international. La mise en place progressive des rituels publics et privés crée un régime émotionnel et jette les bases d’une communauté de sentiments à l’échelle nationale, déterminante pour consolider les idéaux démocratiques après l’indépendance. La libéralisation récente des usages du drapeau l’a transformé en un bien commun mobilisé aussi bien par l’État que par les mouvements de contestation.
