Negotiation and strategy in the support relationship: The person as stake holder in the process of change

The support relationship can be viewed as an approach based on an exchange of expertise between the support provider and a given person, enabling the latter to develop efficient strategies to handle a situation. The notions involved will be explored in this article, in order to underscore their added value and the prerequisites for their application. Current experiences by practitioners in the field in different areas and with a variety of beneficiaries demonstrate the value of a strategic approach involving exchanges of expertise at all stages of the support process. These experiences show that alternatives exist to provide support in a manner such that the beneficiary feels the merit of the change is his or her own.
