N2  - RésuméL’identité territoriale, qui est à l’origine un sentiment individuel limité à un espace restreint, est instrumentalisée politiquement par un changement d’échelle, pour aboutir à la construction d’identités régionales ou nationales. La problématique actuelle du patrimoine cherche à donner une justification culturelle à ces constructions, afin de les pérenniser. Mais des justifications démocratiques peuvent aussi être mises en avant, notamment le rempart que l’identification territoriale pourrait constituer face à une mondialisation des conflits idéologiques. Les États-nations européens ne semblent cependant pas à même de remplir ce rôle; Territorial identity, which is initially an individual feeling restricted to a small area, is instrumentalised politically, via a change of scale, in order to construct regional or national identities. The current debate on heritage is an attempt to provide a cultural justification to these constructs in order to perpetuate them. Democratic justifications may also be put forward, mainly as a bulwark against a universalisation of ideological conflicts. However, Europe’s nation-states do not seem to be able to play this role
