N2  - This article examines the extent to which the activities of manufacturing and selling hosiery in Paris, between 1670 and 1730, can be considered to be a form of craftsmanship. The sector was embedded amongst different guilds, different economic and political privileges and constituted a unique group of actors with a specific mechanical and independent workforce. Analysing the conflicts that are typical of such guilds can help understand how this group was organized as the manufacturing of stockings and bonnets involved a number of different types of distinctive techniques. Here, as in other sectors, what characterizes the nature of such “craftsmen” of the Ancien Régime is mostly clearly revealed through analyzing their relationships with external social figures and commercial outlets. In particular, within the industry’s supply chain, a certain level of ambivalence was maintained with regard to what goods were being made by certain actors and what goods were being commissioned from other actors; Cet article interroge la spécificité d’activités identifiables à un artisanat, dans la confection-vente de bonneteries à Paris entre 1670 et 1730. En quoi l’inscription de ce secteur parmi différentes corporations, différents privilèges économiques et politiques, démontre-t-elle l’existence d’un groupe réalisé par sa main-d’œuvre mécanique et indépendante ? Comment les conflits entre corporations en dévoilent-t-ils le mode d’organisation ? En réalité, la fabrication de bas et de bonnets répond à plusieurs échelles de techniques et de distinctions au sein desquelles, comme pour d’autres secteurs, l’« artisan » d’Ancien Régime ne se révèle qu’à travers sa mise en tension avec des figures sociales et débouchés commerciaux extérieurs. Dans ce cadre, une ambivalence est nécessaire à plusieurs acteurs de la filière entre fabriquer et faire fabriquer des articles de bonneterie
