N2  - En Amérique latine, le xixe siècle correspond, globalement, à un moment de « construction nationale ». La recherche de nouveaux modèles politique et culturel se reflète, entre autres, dans une symbolique (armes, drapeaux, hymne, etc.), qui se donne pour but d’orienter la construction des nouvelles nations. Le cas chilien est à cet égard exemplaire. La symbolique nationale de ce pays exprime, à ses débuts, un choix identitaire pro-indigéniste. Mais très rapidement cette orientation est écartée. Cet épisode conduit l’auteur à analyser l’existence d’une identité nationale construite au détriment de la diversité ethnique. Connaître les origines de ces représentations et, surtout, les mécanismes qui font que certaines s’imposent au détriment d’autres, permet de distinguer la formation d’une conscience et d’une identité nationales, fortement conditionnées par les choix des groupes dominants; Selective memory. Symbols representing the Chilean nationThe 19 th century was generally a time of« national construction » in Latin America, with a search for new political and cultural models to orient the construction of the new nations by a symbolic system of arms, flags, hymn, among other things. Chile is an exemplary case here. At the outset, this country’s national symbol set expresses a pro-native identity option. But this orientation was very quickly discarded, prompting the author to analyze the construction of national identity at the expense of ethnic diversity. Determining the origins of these symbols, and especially the mechanisms by which some of them prevailed to the detriment of others, it can be seen how national awareness and identity thereby formed is strongly conditioned by the choices of the dominant groups
