N2  - À partir d’une critique des usages idéologiques des catégories ethniques en Polynésie française, l’auteur montre que les catégories « ma’ohi » (autochtone) et « popa’a » (étranger blanc) forment une opposition structurante à Tahiti. De même que les deux groupes ethno-culturels « ma’ohi » et « demi » (personnes issues de mariages mixtes) sont objectivement visibles sur les plans culturel, économique et social. Or, les élites essentiellement « demis » se servent de la catégorie « ma’ohi » pour construire un état national dont ils seraient les principaux bénéficiaires; Ethnic Frontiers and a Redefinition of the Political Context in TahitiBased on the critics of the ideological use of ethnic categories in French Polynesia, this article shows that such categories as « maohi » (native) and « popaa » (white stranger) are a founding opposition in Tahiti. Moreover, the two etnocultural groups, « maohi »and« half » (persons from mixed marriages) are objectively visible as far as culture, economy and social are concerned. Yet, the elite mainly « half » uses the « maohi » category in order to build a nation — state of which they would be the primary beneficiary
