<br/><br/> Little is known about the internal psychic changes fatherhood induces although it is now accepted that the father’s presence is necessary from an early stage and that these internal psychic processes influence the quality of this presence. These considerations have motivated this review. It focuses on the period between 1950 and June 2012. It discusses the most pertinent publications over ten-year periods in order to show how viewpoints and research approaches have evolved.
