N2  - This paper presents a longitudinal qualitative study exploring the processes involved in the interactions between migrant women and maternity caregivers during the perinatal period. Interactions were examined using 20 semi-structured interviews with patients (n = 4) and caregivers (n = 10). The results of this study revealed that interactions between patients and caregivers occur in the context of the hyper-medicalization of childbirth, which fosters some degree of psychic containment. This process also presents the risk of facilitating the denial of affect in patients, as well as the denial of their own singular histories, resulting in the emergence of stereotypes about patients’ cultures of origin. By expressing their interest in their patient’s unique identities, caregivers can demonstrate culturally competent practices and foster the creation of harmonious relationships between the mother, baby, and relatives
