N2  - In July 2018, the deletion of the word “race” from Article 1 of the French Constitution was adopted in the National Assembly. This contribution analyzes the arguments used to justify this deletion and tests their consistency. We identify three main arguments: an “ontological” argument (the word race should be deleted because races do not exist), a historical argument (the word race should be deleted because it belongs to an obsolete discursive system), and an expressive argument (the word race should be deleted because such a gesture is a powerful symbol of anti-racism). In the end, these three arguments obey what Charles Mills has called an “epistemology of ignorance” as our contribution seeks to specify a French version of the “colorblindness” found in American constitutional law
