N1 - 90 N2 - This article presents a theoretical framework that uses an epidemic diffusion model and a rational choice model to conceptualize the decision to adopt a given technology. We estimate both models on a sample of 114 farmers in Reunion Island. The results show that the diffusion of new drip-irrigation technology was driven by a spontaneous dynamic with collective knock-on effects. In such circumstances, subsidies may quicken diffusion. By contrast, the adoption of an improved, automation-based irrigation technology reflects a rational choice by the most diversified, best informed irrigators with the highest land/labor ratio UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-economie-et-prevision-1-2010-2-page-59?lang=en&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
