Frédéric Lachèvre: A scholar in pursuit of the libertines - 2019.

91

Frédéric Lachèvre (1855-1943) was an odd character, spending forty years of his existence dragging the seventeenth-century libertines out of oblivion, not to restore them to glory, but to bury them for a second time. The figure of the inflexible autodidact might seem comical today. But his work takes on a completely different cast once resituated in its own period, the Third Republic, and becomes a landmark in the history of ideas.
