The rise of Brazilian cement companies: The case of the Votorantim Group
- 2020.
62
Like all major emerging countries, Brazil has given birth to very large companies engaged in a process of multinationalization. This is the case in the cement industry. The Votorantim Group, which is over a century old, is characterized by its regular growth, good profitability and selective diversification. Well established in the non-ferrous sector (zinc, aluminum, copper), it has also established itself in the pulp and paper industry, the food industry and banking. Nevertheless, it is cement that constitutes the group’s strong point. Having become the national leader in the sector, in the face of competition from powerful Brazilian groups (Camargo Corrêa, then Mover, with InterCement) and foreign companies (Lafarge Holcim), Votorantim Cimentos combines, even today in a rather difficult economic climate, high margins and real international competitiveness, while asserting itself as a benchmark in terms of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
