N2  - The prevailing view of educators and researchers is that mathematics anxiety (MA) emerges with the increasing complexity of mathematical learning, and that is not present before the end of primary school (grade 5). In this paper, we argue that mathematics anxiety may appear at the beginning of primary school (grade 1 or 2) and we provide empirical results in favor of this hypothesis. Moreover, we find in grade 2 the same relation between girls’ and boys’ performance, and between mathematics anxiety and general anxiety, as those observed in later grades
