N2  - Malgré le peu de crédit dont jouit l’idée de vulgarisation, celle-ci reste opératoire pour envisager des œuvres « littéraires » nourries de pensée scientifique. Conçue comme socialisation des sciences, elle révèle la richesse des relations entre science et littérature au XVIIIe siècle : la littérature invente de nouveaux savoirs et s’invente elle-même au contact de la science. Quelques dialogues scientifiques en témoignent, dont Le Rêve de d’Alembert et les Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes; Literature and the Socialisation of the Sciences in the Genre of the Scientific DialogueDespite the relative scorn in which the notion of vulgarisation is held, it stays a necessary concept for the understanding of “literary” works steeped in scientific thinking. Understood as a way of socialising scientific thinking, knowledge and practice, the notion can reveal the depth of the relations between the sciences and literature in the 18th century : literature invented new forms of knowledge and invented itself in relation to the sciences. A number of scientific dialogues, such as Le Rêve de d’Alembert (D’Alembert’s Dream) and the Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes (Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds), testify to this
