N2  - Cet article témoigne d’une démarche réflexive de géographie urbaine sur les États-Unis à partir de trois thématiques : l’urbanisation, le croisement de l’urbanisation et de la globalisation c’est-à-dire la métropolisation et le récit de la métropole institutionnelle. Il souligne l’intérêt d’une contextualisation de l’objet, les avantages d’une pratique de l’immersion dans le terrain étudié, ainsi que la pertinence de l’analyse comparée pour construire un regard décentré; This article presents a testimony and a reflexive approach of an urban geographer working on the United States, based on three themes: urbanization, the intersection of urbanization and globalization, i.e., metropolization and the narrative of the institutional metropolis. It emphasizes the interest of contextualizing the object, the advantages of immersion, and the relevance of comparative analysis to bring out a decentered view
