N2  - The verb-to-TAM grammaticalisation represents a common typological trend found in languages worldwide. This article centres on the syntactic analysis of the modal moneme 要 yào in Standard Mandarin, emphasising its dynamic grammaticalisation process, as it evolves from a modal verb into verbal determiners. Furthermore, it explores the theoretical concept of auxiliary within a functionalist framework, in relation to other syntactic approaches. The semantic development of this moneme is elucidated through examination of both historical and modern written sources
