N2  - Resumé Une revue de la littérature indique que la fonction contenante a pour tous les auteurs post-freudiens le même objet, un travail sur l’archaïque, sur des souffrances très primitives, mais qu’elle se décline différemment, notamment selon son insistance sur la fonction à contenir, sur le processus de contenance, sur son aspect défensif de contention ou sur son résultat. L’auteur essaie de dresser un tableau pour récapituler ces différentes orientations : Winnicott pose cliniquement cette problématique de la contenance, Bion dégage un processus de contenance (fonction alpha) en insistant sur une « fonction à contenir » portée par l’attention, Bick permet de distinguer « la contenance » d’un processus défensif « seconde peau », de contention, Anzieu permet de penser les « enveloppes » comme résultantes de ce qui a été contenu et Bleger la « fonction du cadre » comme liée à de la contention. Des conceptualisations dans le domaine cognitif (Gibello), groupal (Kaës), psychosomatique (Debray) ou plus générales (Houzel, Roussillon) complètent cette analyse; The containing function, a review of the literatureA review of the literature indicates that the containing function has for all the post-Freudian authors the same object: a work on the archaic, on the very primitive sufferings. This paper recaps these various orientations: Winnicott clinically poses these problems of containing, Bion identifies a process of containing while insisting on a “function to contain” which is supported by the attention, Bick makes it possible to distinguish the “process of containing” from a defensive process (as “second skin”) of retaining, Anzieu conceptualizes the “envelopes” as the resultants of what was contained, and Bleger describes the “function of the framework” as related to the retaining process. This analysis is supplemented by conceptualisations from different fields: cognitive (Gibello), groupal (Kaës), psychosomatic (Debray) or more general (Houzel, Roussillon)
