N2  - Critics agree unanimously that Cheikh Anta Diop has completely overturned the approach to, and interpretation of, Negro-African history. After reminding readers of Cheikh Anta’s encyclopaedic education and defining the essential traits of his method ‒ a strict observation of facts allied to a systematic wish to bring out a global vision of the Negro world where all regional histories provide the facets of the same Negro culture and a return to the Egyptian sources shows an uninterrupted course of African history ‒ the author attempts to pin down the originality of Diop’s historical theory.As the initiator of the idea of cultural unity, Diop is the founder of the scientific method for studying the history of the continent. The primacy that he gives to the notion of culture has led to an objective relativism which allows him to cut short all arguments of Negro « convergence » and « contribution » and insert particular African history into general history correctly. His study of historical behaviour has led him to discover and elucidate a fundamental opposition between two visions of the world ‒ that of the Indo-European and that of the Negro-Egyptian.In addition, the powerful movement of his historical thought leads to a cultural totalization which is turned towards the future. Cheikh Anta places his discoveries at the service of the cultural revolution which is indispensable to Africa and the scope of his work allows it to be included among that of such great authors as Ibn Khaldoun, Vico, etc
