<br/><br/> Cet article se propose de revenir sur les origines de la dentelle mécanique de Calais, dont l’apport est généralement attribué à trois Anglais du comté de Nottingham. C’est cependant oublier qu’au pays de Sherwood, un arbre ne peut dissimuler une forêt : ce sont en fait des milliers de lacemakers qui traversent le Channel entre 1815 et 1854, par vagues successives, au gré des innovations technologiques. Entre toutes les villes françaises où ils s’implantent, c’est dans le seul Calaisis qu’ils prospèrent et que trois-cents d’entre eux fondent de petites entreprises. Les raisons de leur succès ne se trouvent pas seulement dans une proximité géographique qui facilite pourtant l’alimentation en matières premières de qualité et le transfert constant d’innovations, mais aussi dans le choix de petites structures d’entreprises spécialisées et externalisées, plus flexibles et mieux adaptées à un marché de mode déjà capricieux, que la grande entreprise intégrée d’Heathcoat à Saint-Quentin.  The English and the Origin of Lacemaking in CalaisThis paper’s aim is to look again at the introduction of mechanical lace-making in Calais, generally attributed to three English lacemakers from Nottingham County. However, this would mean forgetting that, so close to Sherwood, a tree can hide a forest : actually thousands of lacemakers crossed the Channel between 1815 and 1864, in successive waves, borne by the various technological innovations. Of all the French towns where they settle, only the Calais area will provide them with the conditions they need to thrive, and there three hundred of them will establish small workshops. The reasons for their success do not lie only in a geographical vicinity that makes the supply of quality raw material and the constant transfer of technological innovations easier, but also in the choice of small specialized and externalized corporate structures, more flexible and better adapted to an already highly whimsical fashion market than the large integrated Heathcoat company in Saint-Quentin.
