<br/><br/> Alors que Napoléon s’installe à Bayonne d’avril à juillet 1808 au château de Marrac, acheté pour la circonstance, et fait venir de Paris le mobilier pour le meubler, il nous a paru intéressant de savoir qu’elle était alors l’offre du marché bayonnais en matière d’ameublement. Des inventaires après décès nous ont, fort à propos, donné l’occasion d’entrer dans des magasins de meubles bien achalandés et au goût du jour, avec un large choix de meubles en acajou, de trumeaux, glaces, miroirs, pieds dorés, ou encore de papiers peints, s’adressant a priori à une clientèle aisée. À côté de ces magasins, l’organisation de ventes publiques d’effets et meubles de défunts, d’un milieu social souvent assez élevé, permet d’étendre le cercle des consommateurs, notamment par l’intermédiaire des revendeuses de meubles. D’une façon ou d’une autre, nous avons pu constater que de nouveaux goûts s’étaient affirmés à Bayonne concernant le mobilier ou le décor.  Furniture Market and Living Environment in Bayonne under the EmpireAs Napoléon moves into the castle of Marrac in Bayonne from April to July 1808, a castle bought for the circumstance, and brings from Paris the furniture needed to furnish it, we found it interesting to inquire into what the local market proposed in terms of furniture. Post Mortem inventories gave us an opportunity to investigate well-stocked furniture stores, up the taste of the day and proposing a wide selection of mahogany items, overmantels, mirrors, gold-plated stands, or again wallpapers, aimed a priori at meeting the needs of a well-to-do clientele. Along these stores, the auctioning off of the belongings and furniture of deceased persons of an often rather high social background permits to widen the customer circle particularly through the activity of second-hand furniture vendors. One way or other, we could observe that new tastes had taken root in Bayonne with regard to furniture and living environment.
