Multinationalization during the globalization period: the case of Indian power companies after 2007

Nous aimerions apporter une distinction entre multinationalisation et mondialisation avec l’exemple de quatre entreprises électriques indiennes, deux issues du secteur privé et deux du secteur public. Entre 2007 et 2015, ces entreprises ont connu une croissance foudroyante à laquelle ont contribué leurs activités internationales. Parmi celles-ci, certaines appartiennent à la multinationalisation : prolongement des marchés nationaux vers l’extérieur, acquisition de ressources naturelles à l’étranger. Puis, il y a celles que l’on peut ranger dans la mondialisation : tentatives de se conformer à des modèles internationaux, financement par le biais de banques et de maisons financières. Toutefois, les firmes ont également recouru à cette autre pratique liée à la mondialisation : l’endettement comme source principale de financement. Cela a plongé les deux sociétés privées dans une situation financière délicate.  Is the presence of multinational firms enough to speak about globalization? We would like to differentiate between multinationalization and globalization with the case of four Indian electrical enterprises, two from the private sector and two from the public sector. From 2007 and 2015, these companies underwent a tremendous growth to which their international activities did contribute. Among these, some belong to multinationalization: extension of the national markets abroad, getting hold of foreign natural resources. Others are characteristic of globalization. This is the case when companies try to conform themselves to international models or when they finance their activities through banks and financial institutions. However, they also use another strategy linked to globalization: the recourse to indebtedness as the main source of financing. This plunged the two private firms into a delicate financial situation.JEL Classification : D22, F23, L25, L94, N75, N85
