Recent Trends in Social History in Iceland

<br/><br/> This article presents an overview of the work of Icelandic scholars who have worked within the field of social history since the 1970s. The author argues that there was a clear paradigm shift in Icelandic historiography during the late 1970s and early 1980s when a number of historians turned their attention to social history. It is shown that social history as a discipline in Iceland has been closely linked with trends in new social history in the US and Europe. Most social historians have thus collaborated closely with European and American colleagues in the field. It is argued that a strong international profile, as well as international collaboration, is the hallmark of most Icelandic scholars who have worked within social history.  L’article présente une vue d’ensemble du travail des chercheurs islandais qui ont travaillé dans le domaine de l’histoire sociale depuis les années 1970. L’auteur soutient qu'il y a eu un changement radical de paradigme dans l'historiographie islandaise à la fin des années 1970 et au début des années 1980, lorsqu’un certain nombre d’historiens se sont intéressés à l’histoire sociale. Il est démontré que l’histoire sociale en tant que discipline en Islande était étroitement liée aux tendances de la nouvelle histoire sociale aux États-Unis et en Europe. La plupart des historiens sociaux ont donc collaboré étroitement avec des collègues européens et américains dans ce domaine. Il est établi que la plupart des savants islandais qui se sont consacrés à l’histoire sociale se distinguent par un fort profil international ainsi que des collaborations internationales.
