La police juive du ghetto vue par elle-même

The Jewish police of the ghetto seen by itselfKovno (Kaunas) was one of the main Jewish centres of Lithuania. The city is occupied on the 24th June 1941, and the ghetto is sealed of on the 15th August, locking up 30,000 people. Then, it is liquidated in July 1944. The type of document presented here is unique. Written in yiddish by Jewish police officers, who could not avoid being involved in deportations, it consists in an attempt to make a self-examination, if not a self-justification. By the end of 1942, among the 151 police officers, 40 lost life in 1944, after enduring horrid tortures in Fort no. 9, for having refused to hand over the children and the resistants. The others collaborated with the Germans until the end.
