Published in 1972 on the initiative of the Mauthausen Deportees Association of Paris, the study by Pierre Serge Choumoff (1921-2012) constitutes a founding text for the research on “Operation 14f13”. With rigorous methodology, the witness – who became a historian – proves the existence, behind the terms of Erholungslager (convalescence camp) and Genesungslager (recovery camp), of a gas killing centre. Analysing accounting documents along with the camp survivors’ testimony establishes precise data regarding the number of concentration camp prisoners from Mauthausen and Gusen gased in Hartheim between 1941 and 1944 – these numbers are a minimum estimate. This study laid the foundation for later research on this subject.
