N2  - The Alliance Israélite Universelle, founded in Paris by enlightened Jewish notables in 1860, decided to devote themselves to the material and moral support of their “co-religionists” from the Mediterranean basin. In this aim, the Universal Israelite Alliance opened schools all around the Mediterranean, from Morocco up to the Ottoman Empire. Consequently, the principals of the Alliance schools had a ringside seat which allowed them to judge the Armenians' tragic fate between 1894 and 1895. It is some of their reports, all addressed to the head office of the Alliance in Paris, that have been selected here by Claire Mouradian. These documents show how the genocide was the result of a planned process of persecutions
