Enfin, c’est par l’approfondissement d’une situation singulière qu’elle pense rejoindre le plus grand nombre; Madeleine Delbrêl was an artist throughout her life. She lived a certain sort of solitude amongst others: a creative solitude which took her from the project of a literary career to the apprenticeship of a new profession: that of a social service, a solitude which is one of the major themes of her philosophy. Moreover, with her the word “charity” persists over and above its multiple caricatures. The word cannot be found in any of her writing about social work. It is a protected and reserved word.
