Lascivious Saint Sebastian The portrayal of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian during a key moment of the history of art, namely the Renaissance, caused the representation of the martyr’s naked body to arouse a certain sense of eroticism. Fra Bartolomeo thereby caused one of the greatest scandals in the history of art, despite his being a devout man and supporter of the reactionary Savonarola. As a paradigm of evolving ideas, his Saint Sebastian offers up his lascivious, undraped body to our gaze.
