The author investigates the possibility of a ‘grand narrative’ on the basis of the experience of precarity. He emphasizes the tension between present-day calls for a common founding narrative and the fragmented and often unheard reality of the poorest. By exploring alternative forms of narration capable of bearing a collective discourse based on singular experiences, this process suggests an ecclesiology born of mutual recognition of the poor and of Christ encountered in this situation of disunity. Far from being a closed system, the narrative becomes a locus of listening, vulnerability and hope.
