RésuméLa lecture de l’œuvre de Pierre Gourou révèle l’influence qu’ont les constructions critiques de la ‘tropicalité’ et du post-colonialisme sur la géographie anglophone et francophone. Cet article montre comment l’interprétation francophone de Gourou a été articulée en termes disciplinaires et souligne l’absence d’une forte orientation postcoloniale au sein de la géographie française, tandis qu’une littérature anglophone sur la tropicalité a tendu à caricaturer l’engagement de Pierre Gourou et de la géographie tropicale française. L’article souligne enfin la nécessité d’un dialogue anglo-français sur cette question de la tropicalité en géographie.

Readings of the work of Pierre Gourou shed some interesting light on the different bearing that the critical constructs of ‘tropicality’ and postcolonialism currently have on Anglophone and Francophone geography. The paper shows how Francophone appreciation of Gourou has been couched in disciplinary terms, underlining the absence of a strong postcolonial orientation within French geography, whereas an Anglophone literature on tropicality has tended to caricature the involvement of Pierre Gourou and French tropical geography. The need for, and possible means of, closer Anglo-French dialogue over geography’s complicity in tropicality is commented upon.
