La psychanalyse ne se risqua que frileusement à soulever la question de la robe, se réduisant à son tissu comme recouvrement du corps féminin, osant l’allusion à la robe comme seconde peau, ou à sa danse pulsionnelle avec la mode. Cette frilosité aurait-elle à voir avec la fonction vestimentaire elle-même, ou plutôt avec le lien incontour­nable qu’elle tisse avec la féminité ? Là où Freud faisait de la femme un « continent noir », il aura fallu attendre les travaux de Lacan pour que la question de la féminité outrepasse sa dimension subversive. Mais la robe, objet phare de la vie d’une femme, ne serait-elle pas restée pendue au vestiaire avec la multitude des futilités que l’on prête aux femmes ? Ou serait-ce que la robe recouvre l’épineuse rencontre avec la castration ? Pourrions-nous imaginer une reformulation enrobée de la question « Que veut une femme ? » en un « Que soulève la robe ? » Là est notre propos. Il s’agira d’analyser la fonction recouverte par la robe dans le champ psychanalytique, tant du point de vue de la femme qui la porte que de l’autre qui la regarde.

Dresses, parades and evasionsPsychoanalysis ventured timidly to raise the issue of the dress being reduced to its fabric as a re-covering of the female body, daring there to be an allusion to the dress as a second skin, or to its impulsive dance with fashion. Would this reluctance have to do with the dressing function itself, or rather the inescapable link it weaves with femininity ? While Freud made the woman a « dark continent », it was not until the work of Lacan that the issue of femininity passed beyond its subversive dimension. But the dress, a key object in the life of a woman, would it not stay hanging in the wardrobe with the multitude of trivialities that are given to women ? Or is it that the dress covers the thorny encounter with castration ? Could we imagine dressed-up reworking of the question « What does a woman want ? » to be « What raises the dress ? » That is the aim here, to analyze the function covered by the dress in the field of psychoanalysis not only from the point of view of the woman who wears but also from that of the one who looks.
