Face aux limites actuelles de la technologie, l’Homme n’est pas prêt à laisser les machines qu’il aura créées combattre à sa place. À vouloir absolument rester «  dans la boucle de décision », il renonce toutefois d’emblée à une guerre moins sanglante, moins coûteuse, plus efficace et plus respectueuse des règles du droit international. Pourtant, à condition de faire confiance au progrès, le futur du soldat sur le champ de bataille sera bel et bien le robot. Pas seulement cet automate déjà très répandu sur nos théâtres d’opérations, mais un cyber-organisme intégré à un combattant aux performances augmentées et, plus tard, une machine dotée d’une intelligence artificielle si performante que la prise de décision pourra lui être abandonnée en toute confiance.
